Propeller Damage Analysis

This project aimed to demonstrate that ice loads could be deduced from damage suffered by propeller blades.

The Requirement

BMT was contracted by Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) to demonstrate that specific ice loads encountered by vessels could be deduced by the type and amount of damage that was suffered by the Louis S. St. Laurent vessel's propellers.

Approach

The deformed shapes and material properties of two damaged propellers from the CCG S Louis S. St. Laurent were characterized using polymer castings of the blades and material samples from several locations near the hub and towards the tip.

The information was used to create non-linear finite element models of the propellers, and the models were used to derive estimates of the loads;and loading mechanisms that caused the damage.

Outcome

The project demonstrated a complete and innovative toolset for forensic analysis of damaged (deformed) propellers under ice and other loads.
